Dharma & Philosophy

धर्म

Dharma

That which upholds and sustains

Dharma is the principle of right order — duty, virtue and the law that sustains the cosmos and society.
From the root 'dhri' (to hold, to sustain), dharma is that which upholds. It embraces cosmic order (rta), moral duty, and the specific duties of one's stage and station (svadharma). It is context-sensitive (desha-kala-patra) rather than a single fixed rule.

Rta

The cosmic order that dharma reflects.

Svadharma

One's own duty, emphasised in the Gita.
