Maharshi Kapila
Founder of the Samkhya philosophy and an avatar of Lord Vishnu
Introduction to Maharshi Kapila
Maharshi Kapila is a celebrated ancient sage and the founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy. He is widely revered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who imparted supreme spiritual knowledge to his mother, Devahuti, and whose immense yogic power ultimately led to the descent of the river Ganga.
Maharshi Kapila is one of the most profound thinkers in ancient Indian history, traditionally revered as a minor incarnation (amsha-avatar) of Lord Vishnu. He is universally celebrated as the founder of Samkhya, one of the six orthodox schools (darshanas) of Hindu philosophy. His teachings fundamentally analyse the universe through the dualistic concepts of Purusha (pure consciousness) and Prakriti (primordial nature). This philosophical framework deeply influenced subsequent spiritual traditions, including Yoga, Ayurveda, and the Bhagavad Gita.
According to the Bhagavata Purana, Kapila was born to the sage Kardama and Devahuti. He famously imparted the sacred Kapila Gita to his mother, guiding her towards ultimate liberation (moksha) through the path of devotion and knowledge. He is also a central figure in the epic legend of the river Ganga. When King Sagara's sixty thousand sons falsely accused him of stealing their sacrificial horse, Kapila's fiery gaze reduced them to ashes. This monumental event set in motion the epic quest of their descendant, King Bhagiratha, who performed severe penance to bring the sacred river Ganga down from heaven to earth to wash over their ashes and grant them salvation.

He established the Samkhya philosophy, providing a profound analytical framework based on Purusha (consciousness) and Prakriti (nature).
Divine Incarnation

The Kapila Gita
He delivered a magnificent discourse on devotion and liberation to his mother, Devahuti, which forms a vital section of the Bhagavata Purana.
Descent of the Ganga
His fiery curse upon the sons of King Sagara led their descendant, King Bhagiratha, to perform the legendary penance that brought the river Ganga to earth.
