The language of the tradition
Sanskrit ('refined') is the sacred language of the Vedas, written in the Devanagari script.
Devanagari is written left to right, its letters hanging from a top line (shirorekha). It has vowels (svara) and consonants (vyanjana), each syllable an akshara. Sandhi joins sounds euphonically. Learning even a little unlocks the meaning of mantras and stotras.
Svara (vowels)
अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ — short and long.
Vyanjana (consonants)
क-वर्ग to the sibilants श ष स and ह, ordered by place of articulation.
Sandhi
The euphonic joining of sounds across words.
