Shivaratri is kept with fasting and a night-long vigil in worship of Shiva.
Masik Shivaratri falls monthly and Maha Shivaratri once a year; devotees fast, offer abhishekam and keep a jagaran with the chanting of 'Om Namah Shivaya'.
