Maharshi Valmiki
The Adi Kavi — first poet
Valmiki is traditionally revered as the author of the Ramayana and the originator of the shloka metre.
Tradition holds that Valmiki composed the Ramayana, the story of Rama, and is honoured as the Adi Kavi ('first poet'). The shloka metre is said to have arisen spontaneously from his heart in compassion. He is a central figure of the itihasa tradition.
