वेद

The Vedas

The foundational revealed knowledge (shruti)

The four Vedas are traditionally regarded as apaurusheya — not of human authorship — and are the oldest layer of Sanatana knowledge.
The Vedas are traditionally held to be shruti, 'that which was heard' by the rishis in deep contemplation and transmitted orally with great fidelity. Each Veda has four parts — Samhita (hymns), Brahmana (ritual), Aranyaka (contemplation) and Upanishad (knowledge). They are the shared root from which the later traditions draw.

Rigveda

Hymns (suktas) of praise, including the Purusha and Shri Suktam.

Yajurveda

Formulae for the performance of yajna.

Samaveda

Hymns set to melody (saman).

Atharvaveda

Hymns for daily life, healing and philosophy.
