Birth of Mahabharata

महाभारत की उत्पत्ति

Sage Vyasa narrated the tale of Mahabharata, while Lord Ganapati recorded every word as his scribe. Thus was the great epic brought into creation. From then on, the sacred lore was handed down across the realms through different masters. Vyasa first imparted it to his son, Sage Shuka, and subsequently taught it to his foremost disciples. Dividing the narration amongst themselves to transmit across the cosmic worlds, they recounted the epic to different orders of beings: one narrated it to the Devas, another to the Asuras, another to the Pitris, and another to mortal men.

Source / TraditionVyasa Bharatam, Villi Bharatam (Tamil Epic) & the Kathakalakshepam Discourse Tradition
Scriptural ReferencesVyasa Bharatam (Original Core Framework); Shatapatha Brahmana (13.5.4.1); Vayu Purana & Matsya Purana (Genealogical Chapters); Villi Bharatam (Tamil Epic Expansion); Upanyasam / Kathakalakshepam (Living Oral Tradition)
Editorial NoteThis narrative synthesises the foundational Brahmahatya event from the classical Vyasa Bharatam with the dramatic, vivid retelling found in the 14th-century Tamil epic, Villi Bharatam. Preserved through the grand Kathakalakshepam discourse tradition, the story beautifully illustrates the profound philosophical contrast between a king's relentless Rajasic effort and the Sattvic acceptance of Prarabdha Karma.
