Itihasa — The Epics

The Ramayana and the Mahabharata

The two great itihasas narrate dharma through story, and include the Bhagavad Gita.
Itihasa ('thus it was') refers chiefly to Valmiki's Ramayana and Vyasa's Mahabharata. Through the lives of Rama, Krishna and the Pandavas they teach dharma in living form. The Bhagavad Gita — Krishna's counsel to Arjuna — sits within the Mahabharata.

Ramayana

The journey of Rama, traditionally attributed to Valmiki.

Mahabharata

Attributed to Vyasa; contains the Gita and Vishnu Sahasranama.
