Śrī Rudram
श्री रुद्रम् नमकम्
The Namakam forms the first half of the renowned Śrī Rudra-Praśna (found in the fourth Kanda of the Taittirīya Saṁhitā of the Krishna Yajurveda). Consisting of eleven distinct sections (Anuvākas), it derives its name from the recurring adoration "Namaḥ" (salutations). The hymn opens by placating the wrathful, weapon-bearing aspects of Rudra, expands into an awe-inspiring vision of non-dual reality where God is recognized in every element of nature—warriors, artisans, forests, streams, light, darkness, and thieves—and concludes with prayers for peace, protection, and liberation.
- Tradition
- Vedic / Shaiva / Smarta (Krishna Yajurveda, Taittiriya Shakha)
- Purpose
- Purpose Neutralizing karmic debts, existential terrors, planetary afflictions, illnesses, and untimely death. Experiencing the non-dual presence of the Divine in all creation (both pleasant and fierce). Serving as the fundamental Vedic text for Rudrabhisheka, Lagu Rudra, Maha Rudra, and Ati Rudra yajnas for universal peace (lokasangraha) and spiritual liberation (moksha).

Śrī Rudram — recitation
अर्थ
MeaningAnuvāka 1
O Rudra, salutations to your anger, to your arrow, to your bow, and to both your arms. With that arrow and bow of yours which have become most auspicious, grant us happiness. Look upon us, O dweller of the mountains, with that form of yours which is tranquil, non-terrifying, and the destroyer of sin. Make the arrow you hold in your hand peaceful; do not harm our people or our world. We praise you with auspicious words so that our entire living world may be healthy and of good cheer. May the supreme advocate, the primeval divine physician, protect us and crush all venomous serpents and hostile entities. May the crimson, golden-red Lord rising as the sun, along with his thousand Rudras dispersed in all directions, avert their wrath from us. Salutations to the blue-necked, thousand-eyed showerer of boons. Unstring both ends of your bow, O Lord, and turn your arrows away from us. Become peaceful and benevolent toward us. O dispeller of sins, Lord of food, simple ascetic, dark-blue and crimson Lord! Cause no fear to our people or our cattle; let none among them perish or fall sick. O Rudra, that body of yours which is peaceful, the universal panacea, make us live by that healing grace. We offer this devotion to the mighty Kapardin, commander of heroic souls, so that two-footed humans and four-footed animals in our town may flourish in radiant health. Be gracious to us, O Rudra; bring us joy. We worship you with reverence. May we attain that peace, freedom from sorrow, and harmony which our ancestor Manu sought. Harm not our elders, nor our little children, nor our youth in growth, nor those yet unborn. Harm not our fathers or mothers, nor injure our cherished bodies. Slay not our sons, our grandsons, our life-spans, our cows, or our horses; in your anger do not strike down our brave warriors; we propitiate you with oblations and prostrations. Keep far from us your cow-slaying, man-slaying weapons; grant us peace. Protect us, speak on our behalf, and bestow dual blessings on earth and beyond. Praise the celebrated, youthful Lord seated upon the high chariot-seat, terrible and fierce as a lion; being praised, have mercy on us, and let your armies strike elsewhere. May the weapon of Rudra bypass us; may the wrath of the furious Lord avoid us. Loosen your strung bows against your generous worshippers, showerer of boons, have mercy on our children and lineages. O most bountiful, most benevolent Lord! Place your weapons upon the highest tree, clothe yourself in tiger skin, and approach us carrying your tranquil Pinaka bow. O dispenser of grace, rosy-red Lord, let your thousands of weapons strike other targets away from us. Thousands upon thousands are the weapons in your hands; O Sovereign Lord, turn their sharp tips away from us.
Anuvāka 11
Thousands upon thousands of Rudras who dwell over this earth—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The Rudras who abide in the vast atmospheric expanse—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The blue-necked, white-throated Rudras who inhabit the lower nether regions—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The blue-necked, white-throated Rudras who dwell in the celestial heavens—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The Rudras who live in tree-canopies, green as young grass, blue-necked and red-hued—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The Rudras who rule over spirits, some tonsured and some with matted locks—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The Rudras who guard pathways, dispensers of grains, fighters for righteousness—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. The Rudras who frequent sacred fords carrying daggers and quivers—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. All these myriad Rudras who have spread throughout all quarters of the cosmos—we unstring their bows a thousand leagues away. Salutations to the Rudras who abide on earth, in mid-air, and in heaven, whose arrows are food, wind, and rain! Ten salutations to the East, ten to the South, ten to the West, ten to the North, and ten Upward! Salutations to them! May they grant us bliss. Whomsoever we hate and whosoever hates us, we cast into their gaping jaws.
संदर्भ
ContextSri Rudram Namakam is the fifth Prapathaka of the fourth Kanda in the Taittiriya Samhita of the Krishna Yajurveda. Operating on the spiritual axis of Nivritti (inward surrender and ego-dissolution), it derives its title from the recurring litany Namaḥ ("not mine" / salutations). The text systematically placates the wrathful aspect of Rudra, expands into an awe-inspiring vision of non-dual reality where the divine is recognized across all facets of creation—from kings and saints to artisans, hunters, thieves, rivers, and trees—and concludes with prayers to protect the home, family, and cattle from mortality. It also houses the earliest scriptural emergence of the Panchakshari Mahamantra (Namaḥ Śivāya).
