परिचय

About

Lord Surya is the chief solar deity and the visible manifestation of the divine. As the primary source of light and life, He is revered as a cosmic creator and the soul of the universe. His traditional iconography depicts Him riding a glorious golden chariot drawn by seven majestic horses, which represent the seven colours of light and the seven days of the week. This chariot is driven by His charioteer Aruna, the personification of dawn. Surya is usually shown holding two lotus flowers in His hands, symbolising the awakening of life and spiritual consciousness. He is an integral part of the Panchayatana system of worship and is regarded as the supreme reality by the Saura sect.

Significance

The significance of Surya is profound, as He represents the vital life force (Prāṇa) that sustains all living beings on Earth. He is the presiding deity of the intellect and is invoked daily by millions through the powerful Gayatri mantra to illuminate the mind with supreme wisdom. In Jyotiṣa, Surya represents the soul (Ātman), ego, fatherhood, and leadership, heavily influencing an individual's vitality and authority. Healing traditions like Ayurveda attribute immense therapeutic power to sunlight, particularly for eye ailments and bone health. Major festivals such as Makar Sankranti and Chhath Puja are entirely dedicated to expressing gratitude to Him for agricultural abundance and the relentless, unbiased energy he provides to the world.
