परिचय

About

Goddess Lakshmi is the principal deity of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and beauty. As the divine consort and active energy of Lord Vishnu, the sustainer, She assists Him in maintaining the cosmic order (Ṛta). According to the Puranas, She emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthana) seated on a full-bloomed pink lotus, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening. Her traditional iconography depicts Her as a radiantly beautiful woman with four hands, which represent the four goals of human life (Puruṣārtha): righteousness, wealth, desire, and liberation. She is frequently shown being bathed by two celestial elephants, holding lotus flowers, and cascading gold coins from Her lower hand, signifying boundless material and spiritual abundance.

Significance

The significance of Lakshmi extends far beyond material wealth, encompassing spiritual prosperity and moral rectitude. In the Sri Vaishnava tradition, She is venerated as the supreme mediator who intercedes with Vishnu on behalf of devotees seeking grace and salvation. Worshipping Her requires creating an environment of cleanliness, diligence, and harmony, as She is known to be fickle and abandons places plagued by greed, dirt, or discord. During the major festival of Diwali, millions of homes are illuminated with earthen lamps (Dīpa) to welcome Her presence and invoke Her blessings for a prosperous new year. Her eight prominent forms, known collectively as the Ashta Lakshmi, represent distinct facets of wealth, including knowledge, courage, agriculture, and progeny, highlighting Her comprehensive role in sustaining a fulfilling human life.
