Sanskrit textॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि । तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात्
oṃ tatpuruṣā́ya vidmáhe vakratuṇḍā́ya dhīmahi | tánno dántī pracodáyāt
Ganesha Gayatri Mantra — recitation
अर्थ
MeaningOm, let us realise and experience that Supreme Cosmic Spirit; we meditate upon that Lord with the gracefully curved trunk; may that tusked deity inspire, awaken, and guide our intellect towards truth and righteousness. The holy word Tatpurushaya addresses the all-pervading Supreme Being manifest as Ganesha, while Vidmahe conveys the aspirant's longing for direct spiritual discernment. Vakratundaya honours the one whose curved trunk symbolises the primordial vibration of Pranava (Om) capable of straightening life's crooked paths. Dhimahi represents deep, steady contemplation, and Tanno Danti Prachodayat is the humble surrender entreating the tusked master to illuminate every faculty of our consciousness.
संदर्भ
ContextOriginating fundamentally in the Taittiriya Aranyaka (10.1.5) of the Krishna Yajurveda and reiterated in the Mahanarayana Upanishad, this mantra stands as an ancient bridge between Vedic revelation and Ganapatya devotion. While a popular liturgical variant honoring the deity as Ekadanta is found in the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, the classical Tatpurusha phrasing preserved in Vedic shakhas directly reveres Ganesha as the cosmic person. In foundational treatises such as Mantra Rahasyam by Dr. Narayan Dutt Shrimali, the chant is formally listed as the sixth essential deity Gayatri prescribed for the twilight Sandhya liturgy to balance the inner breath and elevate one's meditative capacity.
प्रयोग
How it is traditionally usedChant 11, 21, or 108 repetitions using a red sandalwood mala (rakta chandan), rudraksha, or sphatika beads. Chant during Brahma Muhurta or the evening Sandhya, seated on a clean woollen mat or kusha grass asana facing East or North. Chanting on Wednesdays, Tuesdays, or during Chaturthi tithi (both Shukla and Sankashti Chaturthi) is exceptionally auspicious. It is especially efficacious before sitting for important examinations, launching business projects, signing agreements, or conducting temple rituals. Ensure proper pronunciation based on shiksha, respecting the 24-syllable Gayatri metre by maintaining a gentle micro-pause between the metrical feet (padas) without rushing the rhythm.
