परिचय

About

Lord Ganesha is one of the most widely worshipped figures in the Hindu pantheon. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and the brother of Kartikeya. His unique iconography features a large elephant head (Gajamukha) representing immense wisdom, large ears (Sūrpakarṇa) for listening to devotees, and a prominent belly (Lambodara) symbolising the universe's totality. He is typically depicted with four arms, holding a noose (Pāśa), an elephant goad (Aṅkuśa), a broken tusk (Danta), and his favourite sweet, the modaka. His chosen vehicle is a mouse or rat (Mūṣaka), demonstrating His control over desire and ego.

Significance

Ganesha holds paramount significance as the Vighnaharta, the remover of both material and spiritual obstacles. Consequently, He is propitiated before the commencement of any new venture, ritual, or journey to ensure success and smooth progress. In Hindu philosophy, He represents the fundamental sound "Om" (Auṃ) and the root energy centre, the mooladhara chakra, grounding the spiritual seeker in stability and primal energy. Furthermore, as the lord of intellect and wisdom, He is revered as the patron of letters, learning, and scholarly pursuits, famously serving as the scribe for the epic Mahabharata dictated by the sage Vyasa.
