अर्थ

Meaning

"Om. Let us realise Lord Narayana, the Supreme Abode of all beings. Let us meditate on Lord Vasudeva, the indweller of the universe. May that Supreme Lord Vishnu direct and inspire our intellect toward the highest truth."

संदर्भ

Context

This mantra originates from the sacred Sruti texts of the Vedas. Unlike Tantric beeja mantras, Vedic Gayatris are supreme universal prayers for intellectual illumination and spiritual awakening, recited daily during sandhyavandanam or general meditation.

प्रयोग

How it is traditionally used

Best chanted during the morning twilight (Brahma Muhurta) or evening Sandhya facing East or North. Recited 11, 27, or 108 times using a Tulsi or white sandalwood (Chandan) mala. Chanted during daily Vishnu puja, Ekadashi observances, Shaligram abhishekam, and Satyanarayan rituals. Chanted sitting comfortably in Siddhasana or Padmasana on a woollen or kusha mat.

Editorial NoteThis is classified as a Vedic Gāyatrī mantra composed in the traditional 24-syllable Gāyatrī chandas (meter: 8+8+8). Listed in 'Mantra Rahasyam' (p. 147) as the second primary deity Gayatri for daily Sandhya rituals and in the diverse Gayatri catalog (p. 329). Chanting this mantra at twilight invokes divine equanimity and freedom from mental turbulence. Classical Vaishṇava texts prescribe a Tulasī (holy basil) mālā for invoking Lord Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa, as Tulasī is dear to Him and cleanses the subtle body. As codified in the Agni Purāṇa, facing East is designated for jñāna and śānti, aligning perfectly with the morning sun during traditional gāyatrī japa. śikṣā dictates maintaining the exact metrical cadence of the three pādas (feet) of 8 syllables each, ending with a clean visarga in viṣṇuḥ and a double daṇḍa.

Dharmartha presents traditional knowledge with respect for its sources. Practices vary by lineage and region; this material does not assert exclusive or universal authority.
