परिचय

About

Goddess Durga is the principal form of the Mother Goddess, representing the supreme protective and warrior aspect of divine feminine energy (Shakti). Created by the combined anger and radiant energy of the Trimūrti and other gods, She was manifested to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura, who could not be slain by any male deity. Her iconography depicts Her as a fierce and beautiful warrior riding a lion or tiger, equipped with numerous arms—usually eight or ten. Each hand wields a formidable weapon, such as Shiva's trident (Triśūla), Vishnu's discus (Chakra), and Indra's thunderbolt (Vajra), symbolising Her supreme readiness to combat demonic forces.

Significance

The significance of Durga lies in her role as the ultimate protector of cosmic order (Ṛta) and righteousness. She embodies the fierce, unconquerable power necessary to eradicate profound evil, ignorance, and ego. Despite Her terrifying warrior form, She is revered as a deeply compassionate mother who shields Her devotees from physical and spiritual peril. Her triumph over the Asura is celebrated globally during the magnificent festival of Navaratri or Durga Puja, a nine-night observance dedicated to Her nine distinct manifestations (Navadurga). Philosophically, worshipping Her empowers individuals to harness their own inner strength, courage, and resilience to overcome life's insurmountable obstacles.
